INTERVIEWING
Every now and then, a job comes along that you say, âThis job sounds interesting, I think I can do this job.â You apply for the position and/or express interest in the job to the hiring manager and/or your companyâs staffing recruiter. It is shortly after this point that you are either told you do not have the experience or qualifications needed for the job, they already have someone in mind or that an interview will be arranged. If it is a situation that you are not going to be interviewed, it is important for you to accept this message with professionalism. This is no time for you to rant and rave, swear to get even with people, or stop performing your current job. Take the unfortunate news and move on. You always should think that there are bigger and better things that will come your way in the future and that this particular job was just not for you. If you keep this type of attitude you will be fine.
Now, let us say you have the opportunity to interview. Certainly you want to put your best foot forward. You want to prepare for the interview by doing some research about the job and what it entails. You want to talk to individuals who either are or have been in the position. You want to find out about the manager and how it may be to work for him or her. You want to have your resume in order. You want to anticipate and practice answering various interview questions and you want to be able to communicate clearly and effectively to others what your work history has been and what are your strengths. The information I have described in preparing for the interview is by no means all inconclusive. You should be able to see from this that you have a great deal of work to do to be prepared as the best candidate.
If after all of the preparing and waiting for a response you are fortunate enough to get the job offer be sure to thank all involved in the process. Prior to your transition into the new role, be sure to leave your current position in good order for the person who may replace you. Spend time with your current manager to ensure he knows where you have left things. You will find that when you take these extra steps to ensure that there is a good transition from the old job to the new job, people will see it and appreciate your efforts.
However, if the job is not offered to you, be sure to thank the hiring manager and those in the interview process. Keeping a positive attitude and remaining professional will leave a good impression. Who knows, maybe the next time this job or a similar job opens with this same hiring manager, he will remember how well you handled yourself and perhaps give you consideration again.
